One of the region’s most accomplished classical choirs, Worcester Festival Choral Society, will be bringing J.S.Bach’s celebrated Mass in B minor to the magnificent surroundings of Worcester Cathedral on Saturday 21st March.

The Mass in B minor, which took Johann Sebastian Bach over 25 years to complete, is a glittering compilation of the composer’s ‘greatest hits’ and includes the music that he felt represented his art at its very best.  Never performed in its entirety in his lifetime, today the Mass has become one of the most celebrated choral masterpieces of the Baroque period.

Worcester Festival Choral Society will be performing the Mass in B minor as the last concert of its 2014-15 season, supported by the acclaimed Meridian Sinfonia orchestra.  The concert also features internationally renowned soloists Julie Cooper (Soprano), Helen Parker (Soprano), William Purefoy (Countertenor), Tom Robson (Tenor) and Colin Campbell (Bass). Peter Nardone, Organist and Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral, is the conductor.

Ben Cooper, Chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, confirmed: “This promises to be one of our most stunning concerts of recent years.  We have five, truly outstanding professional soloists, and the orchestra’s period instruments, which play at Baroque pitch, lend a warm, authentic feel.  Added to the wonderful, complex choral music itself, it will be an unforgettable musical event.”

Established in 1861, Worcester Festival Choral Society comprises around 150 auditioned, amateur singers from across the County and beyond. The society stages three major concerts in Worcester Cathedral each year, performing some of the world’s ‘great choral works’ – as well as supplying singers for the annual Three Choirs Festival, which this year celebrates its 300th anniversary.

Tickets for the Saturday 21st March concert, which starts at 7:30pm, are priced between £8 and £25 (some concessions available) and available from Worcester Live! Box Office at Huntingdon Hall, Worcester, tel: 01905 611427; online at www.wfcstickets.org.uk; from the Worcester Cathedral gift shop, or on the door on the night (subject to availability).

BACH - ST MATTHEW PASSION

Johann Sebastian Bach’s inspirational 1727 oratorio St Matthew Passion is both a musical icon for the Christian world and an expression of feelings common to the whole of humanity.

Known as the ‘Great Passion’, it presents a powerful setting of Jesus's final days, drawing on parts of St Matthew’s Gospel.

From intimate grief to monumental crowd scenes, the work’s richly scored arias, chorales and choruses sculpt the story into a gripping drama, told with a vivid sense of theatre by double chorus, ... read more
