Moving choral works come to Worcester Cathedral in memory of Bishop’s late wife Denise Inge
3rd November, 2014
Worcester Festival Choral Society is teaming up with a full symphony orchestra, nationally acclaimed soloists and choristers of Worcester Cathedral Choirs, to perform two inspirational choral works in Worcester Cathedral on Saturday 15th November.
The choir is performing Jonathan Dove's uplifting There Was a Child, which was written by the English composer in 2009 as a tribute to a friend’s son who died tragically young. Filled with both joyous celebration and heartfelt emotion, it is a big, warm-hearted modern masterpiece in the spirit of Britten and Vaughan Williams.
The concert concludes with Gabriel Fauré’s much-loved Requiem, with the beautiful Pie Jesu aria and In Paradisum movement at its heart.
The concert features the Meridian Sinfonia orchestra and internationally acclaimed Soprano, Lorna Anderson; Tenor, Nicholas Mulroy; and Bass Baritone, Lawrence Wallington. Peter Nardone, Organist & Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral, is the conductor.
Ben Cooper, Chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, confirmed: “We are privileged to bring two such breath-taking pieces to Worcester Cathedral, especially supported by a full symphony orchestra and exceptional soloists. It promises to be a memorable evening.”
The concert is dedicated to the memory of Denise Inge, wife of the Rt Revd Dr John Inge, the Bishop of Worcester and Patron of the Worcester Festival Choral Society. A retiring collection in Denise’s memory will be taken in aid of Berega Hospital in the Diocese of Morogoro, Tanzania with which the Diocese of Worcester has links, and Denise’s just-published book, A Tour of Bones: Facing Fear and Looking for Life, will be launched and available to purchase on the evening.
With an illustrious 150-year history, Worcester Festival Choral Society is one of the most accomplished choirs in the region, comprising around 170 auditioned, amateur singers. The society stages three major concerts each year in the magnificent surroundings of Worcester Cathedral, performing some of the world’s ‘great choral works’.
Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7:30pm, are priced between £10 and £25 (concessions available), available from Worcester Live! Box Office at Huntingdon Hall, tel: 01905 611427; online at wfcstickets.org.uk; or on the door on the night.
