‘Come & Sing’ workshop led by Eton College choirmaster is a sell-out success

15th of April, 2024

More than 170 amateur singers from across the UK were in fine voice at an annual ‘Come & Sing’ fund-raising workshop in Worcester’s St Andrew’s Methodist Church on Saturday 13 April, hosted by leading regional choir Worcester Festival Choral Society.

Singers of all kinds flocked to the City to learn one of composer Gioachino Rossini’s best-loved choral gems, Petite Messe Solennelle, in a day, led by one of the UK’s top choirmasters, Eton College Music Teacher Christopher Allsop. Acclaimed organist and recitalist Nicholas Freestone, who is Worcester Cathedral’s Assistant Director of Music, provided piano accompaniment.

As well as several singing sessions, participants enjoyed expert insights about the work, vocal tips and the chance to socialise with other singers. The day ended with an informal afternoon performance with soloists, which singers’ friends could attend free of charge.

Susan White, Chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, said: “Our Come & Sing Rossini workshop offered a brilliant day out for amateur singers – a fantastic chance to try out a classical work that is dramatic, moving and highly enjoyable. We’re already planning our next event for spring 2025!”

Worcester Festival Choral Society, which comprises around 140 auditioned singers, is one of England's most respected choirs of its kind. Closely associated with Sir Edward Elgar in its early years, the Society has just concluded its 163rd concert season. In addition to its annual Come & Sing workshop, the Society holds three major concerts at Worcester Cathedral each year.

Details of the next Come & Sing workshop, as well as upcoming concerts, will be announced soon at
